Traditional Oil Painting: Advanced Techniques and Concepts from the Renaissance to the Present by Virgil Elliott – Hardcover: 224 pages Publisher: Watson-Guptill (August 7, 2007)

As more and more artists today look to the past, there has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in painting realistically--in creating convincing illusions of three-dimensional depth on two dimensional surfaces. How did the Old Masters create their masterpieces? What kind of education allowed these great artists to create such beautiful work, and how can an artist learn these lessons today? Traditional Oil Painting answers those questions and many more. This comprehensive sourcebook explores the most advanced levels of oil painting, with full information on the latest scientific discoveries. Author and distinguished artist Virgil Elliott examines the many elements that let artists take the next step in their work: mental attitude, aesthetic considerations, the importance of drawing, principles of visual reality, materials, techniques, portraiture, photographic images versus visual reality, and color. Traditional Oil Painting helps artists master the secrets of realistic painting to create work that will rival that of the masters.

Ireland by Gordon Wetmore – Unknown Binding: 144 pages Publisher: Nelson (1980)

Reader review: This is a very unusual book about Ireland. It is a large coffee table sized book with over one hundred pictures and numerous quotes from Irish poets, writers and ballads. Up till now, I have described a ton of books that have been published on Ireland over the years and the quality of the pictures improve continually. Getting great pictures from Ireland is not particularly difficult because Ireland is so picturesque that no matter where a camera is pointed, a picture is just waiting.

The unusual thing about this book is that it is not photographs, but sketches of very common things and excellent portraits of people the artist met in Ireland. There are over 100 drawings in both black and white and water colors. The drawings are excellent in every way and that was what got my attention when I picked up the book. It was published in 1980 and to my knowledge, not reissued since. The foreword was written by Princess Grace of Monaco. The quality of the printing, paper and overall construction is first class and was provided with a slip case.
